Colon Cleanse

January 30, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Uncategorized 1 Comment →

I know some people who would do a regular Colon Cleanse. They swear by the benefits of having their colon cleansed regularly. They claim that it gives them great energy and a general feeling of well being.

I’ve only had to do a colon cleansing once and that was only because I had a medical procedure coming up. I couldn’t believe how much I had accumulated in my digestive system!

Anyway, if you want to do a colon cleansing be sure to use a product like Oxy-Powder because it is a scientifically formulated and an all natural cleanser. It does not have the embarrassing side effects of the laxatives and herbal cleansers.

Banned Books

January 30, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Free Speech No Comments →

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia –Malaysia has banned 11 books for allegedly giving a false portrayal of Islam, such as by linking the religion to terrorism and the mistreatment of women, an official said Wednesday.

The government ordered the books - most of them released by U.S. publishers - to be blacklisted earlier this month “because they are not in line with what we call the Malaysian version of Islam,” said Che Din Yusoh, an official with the Internal Security Ministry’s publications control unit.

“Some of them ridicule Islam as a religion, or the facts are wrong about Islam, like associating Islam with terrorism … or saying Islam mistreats women,” he said. “Once you mention something which is not correct, it’s not proper.”

Full story here.

One of the banned books is called Islam Unveiled by Robert Spencer. That book has been translated into the Malay language and according to Spencer that book is still available in Indonesia.

What I find galling is the Malaysian Internal Security Ministry’s admission that the books were banned because “they are not in line with what we call the Malaysian version of Islam.”

That mindset is so typical of the Malay Muslim dominated Malaysian government. Instead of debating and arguing against the “false portrayal of Islam” they have instead chosen to suppress any views that they are not in line with theirs.

These 11 books are only the latest in the growing list of banned books in Malaysia.

What a crying shame!

The way to combat noxious ideas is with other ideas. The way to combat falsehoods is with truth.

iPod case

January 30, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Uncategorized No Comments →

I have a video iPod and I have taken great care not to scratch the screen. Scratches are such a distraction when you are trying to watch a video on a very small screen!

Most of the time my iPod is docked to the portable speakers that I got for it, but I do take my iPod with me on trips and it is on these trips that I worry about scratching the screen.

As such, I was quite delighted to discover an ipod case that is not only not bulky, but scratch proof, clear and ultra-thin as well. Actually it is an ultra-thin film that not only protects the screen but protects the whole body of your iPod.

I cannot wait to order an invisibleShield for my video iPod!

Lowering blood pressure naturally

January 29, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Books, Health No Comments →

prescriptionalternativesbook.jpg

I have been learning a lot of things from Prescription Alternatives by Earl Mindell and Virginia Hopkins. It is one of the best books I’ve borrowed from the library recently!

I have issues with high blood pressure and diabetes, and the pages called A Natural Blood Pressure-Lowering Program is quite an eye opener.

I mean there are things we know people with high blood pressure should avoid like smoking, consuming too much alcohol, too much salty foods, etc.

One thing which was totally new to me was what celery can do to high blood pressure. Did you know that fresh celery, like four stalks a day has been known to significantly reduce blood pressure?

If that is true, I should make a habit of drinking a celery/carrot juice mix daily!

Another thing I learned from the book is that dandelion is an effective diuretic. For people with high blood pressure it is important to drink lots of water and to evacuate that excess fluid effectively.

If there is anything I can do to reduce my blood pressure without resorting to the use of drugs, I am willing to try it! The thing is, I can easily monitor my blood pressure at home with those little monitors.

If despite all I am doing naturally still does not do anything to lower my blood pressure, of course I will do whatever my doctor tells me to do.

Wheelchair accessible vans

January 29, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Uncategorized No Comments →

These days, the fact that you have to rely on a wheel chair does not mean you cannot go places anymore. Life has become a lot simpler for families to bring their loved ones around because there are now wheelchair accessible vans to bring them around in.

Grandpa or grandma does not have to stay home when the family has to go on trips due to the difficulty in transporting a wheel chair especially a motorized one.

The fact that these vans are available in affordable price ranges from dealers like Mobility Works makes it even more attractive for families to own one so as to be able to accommodate their loved ones’ lifestyle.

Diabetic food supplements

January 28, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Health, Herbal Products No Comments →

The items I ordered from my favorite food supplement store yesterday.

Item No: 0561 TURMERIC EXTRACT 95% CURCUMIN Quantity: 1
Item No: 5092 GREEN TEA RED CLOVER Quantity: 1
Item No: 7439 MELATONIN Quantity: 1
Item No: 9732 CAYENNE PLUS FORMULA 973 Quantity: 1

Order Total: $40.48

Three had to do with their ability to lower blood glucose level and one is supposed to be helpful in bringing down blood pressure.

I read an article about melatonin, and thought I’d give it a try. I have stopped taking a diuretic drug because of its tendency to raise my blood glucose level, and since then my doctor has not prescribed me anything to replace it.

Actually, I was supposed to attend a pre-diabetic class this afternoon, but I started having chills during the day. A sore throat developed some time yesterday everything and today, chills and some coughing. :???:

After the pre-diabetic class, I am supposed to make an appointment with my doctor and he will evaluate the status of my pre-diabetic condition and maybe give an alternative prescription for controlling my high blood pressure.

Now I will have to re-schedule my pre-diabetic class. I hope I won’t have to wait a month for the next class, like I did for today’s and then not be able to attend it at the last minute!

Student Loans

January 28, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Uncategorized 2 Comments →

I know a lady who has three young children, a husband who requires expensive prescription drugs, and three parents living under her roof and all of them also requiring regular prescription drugs. She wonders how she was going to pay for her children’s college tuition when the time comes for her children to enter college.

She has a home business that is doing reasonably well, but she wonders if she is making enough to pay for all her family’s immediate needs let alone be able to put money away for her kids’ college education fund.

Another friend at the forum told her to take care of her current needs and not worry about how to pay for her children’s college because if they do well in school there are always Direct Student Loans that they can apply for.

I think this is a fact that most parents tend to overlook. That there are resources that they can access and search for the loans that their children need to pay for their college.

Any parent with the knowledge of the resources available for obtaining direct student loans for her children will have a huge burden lifted off her shoulders.

Petai Dish

January 28, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Cooking 2 Comments →

petaiundang.jpg

This dish is made up of shrimp and ‘petai’ (Parkia Speciosa) stir fried in chilli paste and shrimp paste.

I am pre-diabetic so usually I am careful about what I eat. I am convinced that this particular dish does not raise my blood sugar!

Why? Because this bean is not only stinky but bitter as well. Usually any plant that has some bitterness in it, like bitter melon, is always good for the blood sugar. I do not know for sure if ‘petai’ has blood sugar lowering properties but this morning my fasting blood sugar reading was 81 mg/dL.

Excellent indeed!

Update:

I found some articles that say that petai does indeed have sugar lowering properties!

Web hosting for small businesses

January 27, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Uncategorized 2 Comments →

When I first started my long arm machine quilting business, I felt I needed to have a web presence. Back then I did not know much about domain name registration and where or who should host my business site. My husband did everything for me.

If you were to ask me now, and you have a small business and would like to establish a web presence, I would recommend that you look for a good company that offers shared web hosting.

A good shared web hosting company usually provides email hosting, free spam filters, virus protection, private domain registration, and even free domain registration with every hosting account that you have with them.

For the small business owner, value for money is always a win-win situation.

Diabetic Cookbooks

January 27, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Books No Comments →

Recently I bought a little book called The Best Life Diet by Bob Greene. I really liked the recipes in the booklet because they are suitable for people with diabetes.

I have tried three of the recipes in the book (see putericooks.com), and yesterday I ordered The Best Life Diet by Bob Greene from Amazon as well as two other books.

diabeticlivingslowcooker.jpgThe two other books I ordered were published by Better Homes and Gardens. They are Diabetic Living Slow Cooker, and Diabetic Living Cookbook. I bought two recent issues of the Diabetic Living booklets and enjoyed them so much that I thought I’d buy the books that are a compilation of their previous booklet issues.

I look forward to receiving these books and trying out the recipes there. I have two other diabetic cookbooks, but unfortunately the pictures that come with the books are in black and white and not every recipe has an accompanying picture. I am a visual kind of person and if I don’t see the pictures I can’t appreciate whatever it is as much!

Especially food!
