RIP Tim Russert

June 14, 2008 By: Puteri Category: News No Comments →

I thought my internet connection woes were finally over when I managed to catch some free wi-fi signal from the upstairs patio of my parents’ home. But after one blog post the connection seems to be fading in and out.

I don’t really know what the problem is. My brother does not seem to have any problem receiving the signal from the free wi-fi service provided by the city. Could my problem be with the USB Wi-Fi adapter that I have plugged into my laptop? Do I need one that picks up the wi-fi signal a lot better? I might have to check out one of the computer shops and see what they have that could be better than the one I am currently using.

This morning Doug asked me if I had heard the latest news. What latest news, I asked. About Tim Russert, he said. The last time I connected to the internet was last night, and there was nothing on the Drudge Report that said anything about Tim Russert’s death.

Boy, am I sorry to hear his passing of a heart attack. I used to watch Tim Russert’s Meet the Press every Sunday. Until I decided to stay in bed till I am ready to get up for church, that is. This election cycle, I refused to watch any of the Sunday news show. I just cannot stand the fawning by the media over Barack Obama!

Anyway, I am sorry to hear of Tim Russert’s passing. Television has lost one of the fairer television interviewers in the country.

Rest in peace, Tim.

Obama, Japan, roots for accidental namesake

February 14, 2008 By: Puteri Category: News No Comments →

OBAMA, Japan (AFP) — Barack Obama, who has been credited with tapping support in unlikely places, is enjoying a groundswell of enthusiasm in a small city in western Japan, which is delighted to share his name.

Obama, Japan, is rooting for candidate Obama, hoping that if he becomes the US president he will put this ancient fishing town of 32,000 people firmly on the tourist map and, just maybe, choose it for an international summit.

Supporters in Obama — which means “small shore” in Japanese — have held parties to watch election results, put up posters wishing the senator luck and plan a special batch of the town’s “manju” sweets bearing his likeness.

Full story here.

If I were a resident of Obama, I would be rooting for Barack Obama too! I mean, my support for Obama is not going to make a lot of difference because I won’t be eligible to vote for the presidential race anyway.

Two things the Mayor of Obama says he likes about Obama the candidate. Firstly, Obama the candidate is concerned about global warming. Secondly, Obama the candidate opposed the Iraq war. Huh.

Well, at least the Mayor likes Barack Obama for more than his name!

Cell phone scandals

January 25, 2008 By: Puteri Category: News No Comments →

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Police faced a difficult if not impossible task Thursday as they tried to stop the spread of pornographic video and photos of two high school girls, images that were transmitted by cell phone to dozens of the girls’ classmates and then to the wider world.

District Attorney James B. Martin said at least 40 Parkland High School students believed to have received the images would not face prosecution as long as they show their phones to police by Tuesday to ensure the images have been erased.

But students at the school said the distribution was far more widespread.

Full story here.

Now is a good time for parents to start checking on the files in their kids’ phones, or their myspace accounts.

Who knows what they will find? Nude pictures of their kids and of other kids?

The cell phone has become more than just a tool for talking to each other. It can also take pictures and videos.

With the video function in their cell phones, guys are taking videos of their girlfriends doing things to them, that these girls might not want the world to know about. Girls might one day find videos of themselves performing sex acts on their boyfriends being seen throughout the world on video sharing websites.

Whether you’re a teenaged girl or an adult, nobody wants the world to see things they had done especially things done in private.

Multi-culturalism stupidity

January 24, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Free Speech, News, Politics No Comments →

A story based on the Three Little Pigs fairy tale has been turned by a government agency’s awards panel as the subject matter could offend Muslims. The digital book, re-telling the classic story, was rejected by judges who warned that “the use of pigs raises cultural issues”.Becta, the government’s educational technology agency, is a leading partner in the annual Bett Award for schools.

Full story here.

This is simply a case of sheer stupidity of the proponents of multi-culturalism.

Three Little Pigs is now offensive? If one were to follow that line of reasoning, British TV and publication can now never refer to anything that has to do with pigs, pork, bacon, ham? Because they all refer to a subject matter that is “haram” to the group of people that may be offended?

Does that mean also that movies like “Babe”, “Gorky” and even the children television series like Jakers, because they all feature pigs? And classics like Animal Farm will never be used in the public schools again because there are pigs in that book?

The British government should get over the fact that no matter what, people are going to be offended over every little thing. There is no reason for them to give special deference to one particular group of people while ignoring others.

Sheer stupidity, indeed!

Roe versus Wade’s 35th anniversary

January 22, 2008 By: Puteri Category: News No Comments →

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade’s ruling. The ruling that made abortion legal throughout the country.

Since that ruling, there have been more than 50 million abortions performed in this country.

More than 50 million children that were never born. More than 50 million people that could have become productive citizens and tax payers.

The only good news in this whole sordid history is that the rate of abortion has slowly declined in the last few years. I agree with the National Right to Life: that women are more likely to reject abortion if they are fully informed about risks related to the procedure, the development of the fetus, alternatives to abortion, parental involvement laws and other factors.

The 35th anniversary of the ruling of Roe v. Wade is not a day to rejoice, but a day to mourn for the 50 million babies that were never given the chance to be born. A day to mourn the loss of the soul of a nation.

Sausage Shortage

January 17, 2008 By: Puteri Category: News No Comments →

The Swiss are in a panic over a possible shortage of one of their favourite speciality foods, cervelat sausage.

Meat producers say it could be off the menu by the end of the year because of a lack of key ingredients, in particular a shortage of the Brazilian cows’ intestines used for its skin.

The country of seven million eats around 160 million cervelats raw, boiled or grilled every year.

Source: The Press Association via Breitbart

Oh boy, it seems that Malaysia is not the only country in the world facing shortages of certain food items! For the last few weeks or so, Malaysians have been faced with shortages of cooking oil and flour.

But I don’t think Malaysia will ever face any shortages of a particular kind of sausage - cervelat sausages. I am not sure if even such a sausage is available in Malaysia!

The only difference between the shortage in Switzerland and Malaysia is that the sausage that they like in Switzerland is dependent on the supply of Brazillian cows’ intestines, something that Switzerland does not produce on her own.

In Malaysia the shortage of cooking oil, which is a government subsidized item, seems to be artificially manufactured. Malaysia is a leading producer of palm oil, and the cooking oil used by the majority of Malaysians is made from palm oil. This has led the opposition in Malaysia to allege the cooking oil shortage was due to an artificial suppression (re Malaysiakini news article) of the prices so as to give the appearance that inflation is in check.

I have not heard any allegation by the opposition parties in Switzerland that the sausage shortage was due to government manipulation.

Will the politicians in Malaysia use the sausage shortage to convince the people that if shortages of food items can happen in developed countries like Switzerland, what more to say a country like Malaysia?

Twins married to each other by mistake

January 12, 2008 By: Puteri Category: News No Comments →

TWINS who unwittingly got married after they were separated at birth were victims of a quirk of fate “cruel beyond belief,” it emerged last night. The smitten brother and sister — adopted by different families — discovered the shattering truth only after tying the knot.Against all odds they had met and fallen for each other — neither even knowing they had a twin.

The horrified British couple faced the heartbreak of seeking to have their marriage annulled in the High Court after eventually finding out their love was forbidden.

A judge was forced to rule the union was NEVER valid in law.

Last night the peer who uncovered the astonishing case told The Sun of the twins’ “trauma”.

Lord Alton of Liverpool said: “Anyone hearing this story would feel heartbroken for them.

Full story here.

Indeed it is a traumatic and heart-breaking case. If it were me in that situation, I cannot imagine how horrified I would be. Imagine being intimate with your own brother! *shudder*

I can imagine the attraction between the two, because people are naturally attracted to someone who looked like them. Many, many years ago, I was at a photo studio and I looked at the wedding pictures on display on the walls at the studio. There must have been about 10 wedding pictures on the wall, and every couple, except one, in the pictures looked a lot like each other.

There is one couple that I know. If you didn’t already know that they were husband and wife, you would have thought that they were brother and sister! In fact I was quite concerned at one point when I first saw them together. I wondered if they were not in fact siblings!! You see, the lady, was an adopted child, and she never knew her blood siblings. I did ask around and I was relieved when I was told that they couldn’t possibly be blood related because they were from two different ethnic races.

According to an expert, brothers and sisters who are raised in the same household will not get attracted to each other. It is a case of familiarity breeds contempt, and also could be nature’s way of preserving the gene pool.

I think parents who adopted one half of a twin should inform the child that he or she has a twin that has been adopted by another family. If for no other reason then to prevent an incident like the one in the news story quoted above.

I have long been concerned about children conceived from sperm obtained from sperm donors. Can you imagine the number of children running around who came from the same gene pool? Children raised by different families? And who could possibly end up married to each other in the future? :???:

Big Screen TV

January 07, 2008 By: Puteri Category: Electronics, News 2 Comments →

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp will begin selling a 108-inch LCD television later this year, executives told the Consumer Electronics Show on Sunday.

Executives also said at a news conference that Sharp had developed a prototype 65-inch liquid crystal display TV that was just over 1 inch thick and weighed 23 percent less than previous models.

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is the industry’s largest U.S. trade show.

Source: Reuters

Wow, a 108-inch LCD TV? That would be something, won’t it? We have a 40-inch projection TV that is over 10 years old but still works. The image could be sharper though. :-)

I’ve been coveting a 52-inch LCD HDTV for the longest time, but I think I’ll save towards that 108-inch TV! I’m sure it is going to cost me a bomb, unless Sharp is able to mass produce it quickly. They should make the price of that big screen TV, now THIS would most certainly deserve the title “Big Screen”, affordable so they’ll be able to sell it like hot cakes! I’m sure there are many people who would love to own a 108-inch TV! I guess everyone would, if only they could afford it! :-)

Getting rid of loiterers

December 19, 2007 By: Puteri Category: News No Comments →

Do you own a business? Do you have teenagers loitering outside your business? Have you thought of ways of getting rid of them but they do not seem to work?

How about having violin concerto music playing 24 hours a day coming from speakers heard within a 25 feet of your business?

Yes, it works! Why? Well, most loiterers are kids, and hip and cool kids do not like violin music! Whoever it was who came up with this suggestion sure knew the way kids’s minds work!

Or if you want to go high tech, a gadget called the Sonic Teenager Deterrent works just as well.It emits an uncomfortable high-pitched noise designed to disperse young loiterers outside businesses who has installed this gadget without bothering adults.

Is that you, Hillary?

December 17, 2007 By: Puteri Category: News No Comments →

hillary2.jpg

Is that you, Hillary?

My goodness, is this what a presidential campaign can do to your looks? Just imagine what being President will do to her looks if she gets elected President!

Being the President of the most powerful country in the world is not a catwalk. Just look at George W. Bush’s pictures during his first year in office verses pictures of him now. It has only been 7 years but do you really age that quickly in 7 years?

I think Rush Limbaugh’s question needs to be asked. Will Americans want to watch a woman get older before their eyes on a daily basis?

I do not believe Hillary Clinton is one of those women who will age gracefully.  I won’t be surprised though if she went for a Botox treatment after the release of this haggard picture of her!  John Kerry went for Botox during his election campaign.  So why wouldn’t she go for one too?
